Rural farming communities in Sikka Regency, Flores Island, East Nusa Tenggara Indonesia, face water scarcity during the long dry season during 7–8 months of each year. Water scarcity is compounded by a lack of safely managed water supply infrastructure and facilities, which makes rainwater storage key to fulfilling household water needs, including drinking water. When the rainwater supply is exhausted, household members, mostly women, must carry water from springs or other access points far away.
The project aims to benefit household economic and health outcomes by ensuring rural families and primary school students have access to safe drinking water. The provision of Nazava water filters will reduce:
- costs of purchasing fuel (kerosene) to boil drinking water
- time and physical burdens of collecting firewood, particularly on women and children
- time women spend in unhealthy and smoky kitchen environments
- risk of consuming unclean water
- consumption of unhealthy drinks by students.
Rotary club Bali Seminyak, Indonesia, joins forces with Rotary club Veenendaal, The Netherlands, to:
- Supply safe drinking water in the home
Provision of Nazava water filters to 500 households will ensure the provision of safe drinking water in the home for between 1,200–2,500 individuals. Using the filters will reduce the time and physical burden of collecting firewood for boiling water, which is mostly borne by women, or alternatively the cost of purchasing kerosene for boiling water on stoves. Women will also spend less time in smoky kitchen environments.
2. Safe drinking water in schools
Schools in Sikka do not provide drinking water to students. Installing 56 water filters (7 water filters in 8 schools) will enable students to remain hydrated, improve classroom focus and reduce costs of purchasing refreshments during the school day.
The project will save an equivalent of 1 million plastic bottles a year.
You want to help? The waterfilters only costs 380.000 IDR or 20 euro, and will provide save water voor a family for 3 years. Please contact us.
